- What are the CF supervisor supervision requirements?
- Per segment, each mentor must provide a minimum of 6 hours of direct care observation and 6 hours of indirect mentorship activities. Across three segments that totals 18 hours of each.
- Is it 18 observations or 18 hours?
- Hours. ASHA states 6 hours of direct care observation and 6 hours of indirect mentorship per segment. Secondhand summaries often restate this as '18 observations,' which is a different and much easier bar.
- Does CF supervision have to be in person?
- For segments beginning before August 1, 2027, at least 3 of the 6 direct observation hours per segment, per mentor, must occur in person. For segments beginning on or after that date, ASHA's 2027 standards allow direct observation in person or virtually, with up to 100% telepractice and telesupervision.
- What counts as indirect mentorship?
- Reviewing diagnostic reports, treatment records, and plans of treatment; monitoring participation in case conferences or professional meetings; and evaluating the fellow's work by consulting with colleagues, clients, or their care partners.
- Can my mentor observe me from a recording?
- No. Direct care observation must occur in real time, with the mentor watching you provide evaluation, treatment, or counseling. Reviewing a recording afterward does not count as direct observation.
What ASHA requires, per segment
Each mentor must complete a minimum of 6 hours of direct care observation and 6 hours of indirect mentorship activities during each segment. Across the three segments that totals 18 hours of direct observation and 18 hours of indirect mentorship.
These are hours, not counts of observations. Summaries of the CF requirements often restate them as “18 observations,” which is a different and much easier bar. Track hours.
The in-person rule people miss
At least 3 of the 6 direct observation hours, per segment and per mentor, must occur in person. In-person hours are a subset of your direct observation hours, not an extra bucket on top. Six hours of observation delivered entirely over video does not meet the requirement.

Reviewing diagnostic reports, treatment records, and plans of treatment; monitoring your participation in case conferences or professional meetings; and evaluating your work by consulting with colleagues, clients, or their care partners.
What counts as direct
Direct care observation must happen in real time, with the mentor watching you provide evaluation, treatment, or counseling to the person receiving care or their care partners. Reviewing a recording afterward is not direct observation.
