- An active CCC-SLP held throughout the entire fellowship, 9 months of full-time practice experience (or the part-time equivalent) after being awarded the CCC-SLP, and at least 2 hours of professional development in supervision completed after earning the CCC and before becoming a CF mentor.
- What happens if my CF supervisor isn't qualified?
- ASHA states that a Clinical Fellow may not count hours earned during any period of time that the CF mentor does not meet the supervision requirements. Those hours are not reduced or appealed — they do not count.
- Whose job is it to check?
- Yours. ASHA states it is the Clinical Fellow's responsibility to verify their mentor's status and ensure it remains current throughout the fellowship.
- How often should I check my supervisor's status?
- ASHA names four moments: before your first day, at the beginning of each segment, before each feedback session, and before you submit your certification application.
- How do I check whether my supervisor holds a current CCC?
- ASHA publishes a certification verification directory you can search by name. It shows current certification status and the date the CCC was awarded, which is what you need for the 9-month requirement.
Why this is worth thirty seconds
ASHA is unusually blunt about the consequence: “A Clinical Fellow may not count hours earned during any period of time that the CF mentor does not meet the [supervision] requirements.” There is no partial credit and no appeal. Hours worked under a supervisor who was not eligible simply do not exist.
It also puts the checking on you: “It is a Clinical Fellow’s responsibility to verify their CF mentor’s status to ensure their mentor’s certification remains current throughout the duration of the CF experience.” Not your employer’s, and not your supervisor’s.
The requirement people miss
The 2 hours of professional development in supervision is the one that catches experienced clinicians out. A supervisor can have practised for twenty years, hold a spotless CCC, and still not have done it — because it became a requirement under the 2020 standards. Asking is awkward. Repeating a segment is worse.
